Major Current Concern
According to Michael Flaherty of the NYS DEC, didymo has been discovered in the Roundout Creek below the Roundout Reservoir. He reports on March 15,2011, that there is no sign of it above the Roundout Reservoir or in the Neversink.
We must be diligent in alerting people about procedures for securing didymo does not enter the Neversink River or Reservoir along with people and their animals.
Threat of Invasive Species
The Neversink has been studied by many governmental and private agencies. The major current concerns are acid rain, erosion of stream banks causing sedimentation, and the damage the wooly adelgid can do to hemlocks that stabilize banks and cool waters. Longer reaching issues are the threat of massive development in nearby areas and the threat of invasive species.
